Engineered Coatings, Inc. (ECI) is a flexible business dedicated to the development of new coating materials, coating deposition methods, and solutions to coating problems encountered in the government sector and commercial industry.
Engineered Coatings offers a wide range of services, including: 1) coating toll services, 2) material (coating and substrate) recommendations and failure analysis, 3) tribological (wear, galling, erosion, and fatigue) testing services, and 4) grant-writing services.
In the area of coating deposition, we have experience with the deposition of multicomponent coatings, multilayer architectures, and unique compounds by reactive deposition. Specific materials that we have fabricated in coating form include nanocomposites, hard ceramics/cermets, metals, oxides, nitrides, diamondlike carbon (DLC), solid lubricants, and quasicrystalline coatings.
These unique coatings are deposited with our three state-of-the-art physical vapor deposition (PVD) coating systems, an atmospheric-plasma chemical vapor deposition (AP-CVD) system, and an ultrasonically-agitated, atomized-spray deposition system (USD). The PVD systems employ the latest developments in unbalanced magnetron sputtering technology. Our pre-production system incorporates a unique method (licensed from Southwest Research Institute) to increase the plasma density, which significantly enhances ion bombardment (and can increase substrate temperature) during film growth, which results in excellent coating properties. With these unique deposition methods, we are able to deposit thin-to-thick (over 50mm (0.002 in.)) films with exceptional properties, including excellent adhesion, corrosion-resistance, and abrasion/erosion-resistance. Our PVD barrel-deposition system enables the cost-effective coating of round or circular components. We have developed innovative fixturing and translation methods (e.g., rotational planetary stages) for holding and rotating a wide range of test specimen and part shapes, including disks, flats, cylinders, rings, and specially-shaped parts.
Our AP-CVD system incorporates a RF-powered plasma head, liquid precursor bubblers, and a 3-axis robot for plasma-head translation. This system is ideal for depositing thin amorphous oxide coatings at relatively low substrate temperatures, in a non-vacuum environment. Our USD system offers a unique method to disperse and spray nanoparticles in a solvent carrier or a polymer binder. Employing both the AP-CVD and USD systems, mounted on a common robot head, offers a unique hybrid method to deposit multilayers of nanoparticles dispersed between layers of amorphous oxides.
Our Data Sheets / Brochures provide additional information and specifications about our coating systems and materials, and related services.
